January 25, 2006 | CAD NewsCADS Releases AdvanceSteel 6.1 for Structural Steel DesignThe latest release of CADS’ 3D steelwork modeling software effectively addresses curved beams and circular structures. In fact AdvanceSteel 6.1 introduces many new tools and enhancements to improve its effectiveness in creating and modifying all types of structural steelwork.
A powerful object oriented package running in AutoCAD, AdvanceSteel 6. 1 offers an expanded design capability and even greater ease of use.
New tools include:
- a copy function for both macro and interactive joints which automatically selects corresponding parts to save time;
- new user interfaces for the drawing styles manager and process manager to improve usability; and
- a new macro to create fully adjustable mezzanine floor layouts.

Additional functionality includes the ability to create:
- beams from lines and polylines (including 2D, 3D, straight and curved);
- customized 3D folded and curved plates; and
- cladding for the outside of buildings.
The choice of joints available to users is extended with the introduction of bent plate joints for connecting a secondary beam to a main beam; corner base plate joints for columns; and joints for working with curved beams, including single and double-sided end plates, fin plates, and angle cleats and bent plates for use with curved main beams. Users can also save and reuse interactive joints.

Enhanced options for creating compound beams include a library for users to store their own sections in, for future reuse.
Further enhancements enable users to retain manual modifications they have made to their drawings after an update, while labeling and views of drawings have also been improved. Users can now modify the xy-viewport and depth of view as well as rotate a view, all from within a drawing.
AdvanceSteel 6.1 is ideal for modeling building structures, mezzanine floors, hot and cold rolled products, stairs and ladders, and miscellaneous steelwork. It is fully integrated with AutoCAD, includes AutoLisp and VBA programming interfaces for users to create their own customized macros, and links to 3D analysis and design software, such as SMART Portal 3D, so that the design engineer’s model can be fully re-used.
AdvanceSteel 6.1 is supplied by CADS, a leading international software company specializing in structural engineering design and detailing software, whose applications are used worldwide by consulting engineers, civil engineering contractors, builders, national and local governments, the structural steel industry and Rebar fabricators.
