ANSYS 2009 Multiphysics Image Gallery Competition Results

ANSYS, Inc - a global innovator of simulation software and technologies designed to optimize product development processes announced the winners of 2009 Multiphysics Image Gallery Competition.

For the first time in the 8-year history of ANSYS Image Contests two companies from Russia are in the list of winners - EMT R  (Moscow) and CompMechLab  (St.Petersburg) with projects Aeroelastic simulation of air engine fan (EMT P) and FE analysis of human brain for solving the forward problem in Magnetic Field Tomography (MFT) (CompMechLab and City University London) became winners of the Competition.

For CompMechLab it is the fourth victory in ANSYS Image contests (2003, 2004, 2008 and 2009). This is a unique achievement among 79 winning companies in 2002-2009.

ANSYS, Inc - a global innovator of simulation software and technologies designed to optimize product development processes announced the winners of 2009 Multiphysics Image Gallery Competition.

Multiphysics Image Gallery Competition was launched in 2008, based on the success of annual ANSYS European Wall Planner competition. Thus year the competition is expanded globally in an online format.

According to the Competition rules, twelve winners are to be exhibited in an all-new Online Multiphysics Gallery on ANSYS.com. This gallery will showcase a collection of the most striking images that illustrate real-world multiphysics applications using ANSYS software from around the globe. Images are judged on the quality of theirs application of multiphysics software from ANSYS and the resulting benefits to the submitting company.

Image contets were launched by ANSYS Inc. in 2002 and are held annualy. Among 69 winners of 2002-2008 contests the world-leading industrial companies are presented: Airbus, Alstom, Ferrari, GE Oil & GasGerman Aerospace Center, Robert Bosch Kft., Siemens Power Generation and many others.

ANSYS FLUENT & Gambit

Mahle utilised Gambit & ANSYS FLUENT to study thermo-fluid changes in rail and cable tunnels without having to build the expensive test-rig.

WINNER North America - Camoplast Inc. (Canada)

WINNER North America - Camoplast Inc. (Canada)

ANSYS Workbench

Simulated the elastomer track structure under different load cases. with the powerful built-in hyperelastic material model tools, Camoplast was able to simulate different scenarios to determine the maximum constraint inside layers for design optimisation. Those tools help us to create higher quality products and limit prototype iterations with simulation.

Astec (USA - TN)

Runner up - Astec (USA - TN)

ANSYS FLUENT & EDEM

ANSYS FLUENT coupled to the DEM solver EDEM was used to simulate heat transfer from a natural gas burner to rock particles in an aggregate dryer.  The simulation provides invaluable insight into the drying process enabling the internal features of the drum to be optimized for increased drying efficiency resulting in better performance and lower energy costs.

Summary. This paper presents the methodology and some of the results of accurate solution of the forward problem in magnetic-field tomography based on magnetoencephalography for brain imaging. The solution is based on modeling and computation of magnetic-field distribution in and around the head produced by distributed 2-D cortical and 3-D volume lead current sources. The 3-D finite-element model of the brain incorporates realistic geometry based on accurate magnetic resonance imaging data and inhomogeneous conductivity properties. The model allows arbitrary placement of line, surface, and volume current sources. This gives flexibility in the source current approximation in terms of size, orientation, placement, and spatial distribution.

For CompMechLab it is the fourth victory in ANSYS Image contests (2003, 2004, 2008 and 2009). This is a unique achievement among 79 winning companies in 2002-2009.

Only four companies of 79 are three-times winnes:
- EMT R (Russia, 2005, 2006 and 2009),
- Dyson (Great Britain, 2002, 2004, 2007),
Mouchel (Great Britain, 2003, 2004, 2005
- TriVista Engineering (Great Britain, 2003, 2004, 2006).

No other Russian companies except CompMechLab and EMT P may be found in the list of 79 winners in 2002-2009.
